1970 (D) Roosevelt Dime - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001 / DDR-001

Description

1970-D WDDR-001 is a doubled die reverse on the 1970-D Roosevelt dime, cataloged by the Wexler team and by VarietyVista as DDR-001. Both cite Cherrypickers FS-801, which Wexler writes as FS-10-1970D-801. Wexler describes a Class V clockwise spread from a pivot near 6:00 on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the torch flame, the upper olive and upper oak leaves and branches, with a slight spread on ONE DIME, and cross-references the die as CONECA 1-R-V. It records two stages. At Stage A the obverse has a light scratch running NNE from the top of the 0 in the date; the reverse has a light scratch running south from the base of the second U in PLURIBUS, light north-south scratches between the upper olive leaves and the torch's top, and a scratch running SSW from the lower right tip of the A in STATES. At Stage B the obverse shows a gouge NE of the 0, and the Stage A reverse scratches remain visible though weaker. John A. Wexler submitted the coin. VarietyVista, crediting Ed Raser and James Wiles with the report, describes a medium spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the flame, the outer leaves, the dots, UNUM, the E PLU of PLURIBUS, and DIME, and notes that the variety turns up in Mint Sets. It records four stages. Under UVC-535 and DMR-002, Stage A shows a light scratch from the lower left of the A to the lower part of the first T in STATES, with the mint mark slightly right of center, both in an early die state; at Stage B reverse and obverse are in a middle die state. Under UVC-536 and DMR-003, Stage C has a scratch running north from the B of PLURIBUS in a late-middle die state, and the obverse die has been changed to one in an early state with the mint mark far right of center. At Stage D the reverse is in a late die state and the obverse in a middle one.
