1970-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004
ErrorDescription
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1970-D 10¢ WDDR-004, this Roosevelt Dime displays a Class V clockwise (CW) pivoted hub spread radiating from a pivot point at approximately the 8 o'clock position on the die face. The resulting doubling appears on STATES OF AMERICA, the left side of the torch flame, the uppermost olive leaves, the upper oak leaves, UNUM, and slightly on DIME — a wide distribution of affected elements that traces an arc from the national inscription through the central torch design and into the denomination. The pivot at 8 o'clock means elements at the 2 o'clock position (directly opposite) received the greatest displacement, with intensity diminishing toward the pivot point itself. Obverse die markers include parallel SSW/NNE die scratches to the left of Roosevelt's lips, while the reverse shows a small die gouge touching the top of a letter in AMERICA. No additional cross-references are known. The 1970-D Roosevelt Dime belongs to the clad and silver proof era (1965 to date), with Denver business strikes produced in copper-nickel clad composition. Class V pivoted hub doubling creates a characteristic rotational spread that can be confirmed by checking whether the doubling intensity varies systematically around the die face — strongest opposite the pivot, weakest near it. John R. Sinnock's Roosevelt Dime reverse, featuring the torch of liberty flanked by olive and oak branches, provides intricate organic design elements where even subtle pivoted doubling creates visually interesting separation on leaf edges and flame contours. The multiple affected zones spanning nearly half the reverse circumference indicate a pivot event of meaningful angular magnitude.
