1969 (S) Jefferson Nickel - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-001

Description

Designated WRPM-001 by the Wexler Team, this 1969-S Jefferson Nickel represents the primary repunched mintmark variety for the regular-strike issue from San Francisco — distinct from the proof coinage that the facility had recently begun producing. San Francisco in 1969 served dual roles, striking both circulation-quality nickels bearing the S mintmark and proof specimens for collector sets, each program requiring its own working dies. On regular-strike dies, the S mintmark was hand-punched on the obverse near the date using a steel letter punch and mallet, and WRPM-001 preserves evidence of repositioning from an initial misaligned impression. The 1969-S business strike represents one of the later dates when San Francisco contributed to circulating nickel production — a practice that diminished through the 1970s as the facility focused on proof and collector coinage. As the primary RPM for this date, WRPM-001 typically exhibits the most visible repunching or was the earliest discovery, establishing the baseline against which subsequent varieties are compared. Collectors should examine the S mintmark area under magnification to observe the overlapping punch impressions.
