Description

Classified as Class II Distorted Hub Doubling, the 1969-S Jefferson Nickel WDDR-010 shows a close spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with displacement increasing from left to right across both legends. This gradient is characteristic of a tilted hub whose distortion is minimal at one edge and progressively greater across the die face. Class II doubling produces variable spread intensity because the hub-to-die contact angle differs across the surface, unlike the uniform displacement of Class I rotational doubling. Close classification means the secondary impression sits near the primary, requiring moderate magnification to resolve on the 75% copper, 25% nickel composition. The 1969-S was struck at the San Francisco Mint, which during this era was transitioning from circulation production toward its modern role as the primary proof and collector coin facility. Reverse die markers include a die gouge to the right of the M in UNUM and a die dot in the field above the left edge of Monticello. No obverse markers have been noted.
