1969 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003
Error
Description
Listed as WDDO-003 by the Wexler team and cross-referenced as Coppercoins 1969P-1DO-001, this 1969 Philadelphia-mint doubled die obverse exhibits a strong clockwise (CW) spread visible on the 9 in the date. The concentration of observable doubling on a single numeral suggests the hub's displacement between impressions was relatively small in absolute terms, producing separation that exceeds the visibility threshold only on the specific curves of the 9 — where the geometry amplifies even minor rotational offsets into detectable spread. Obverse die markers include a die gouge between the R and U in TRUST and a die scratch running WSW from the bottom of the I of IN. The reverse carries an exceptionally rich complement of die markers: a strong die scratch runs from SW to NE through the center of the E in ONE; two die scratches running SE from the center right side of the N in CENT meet at a point between the lower N and T; a long die scratch runs NW from the top left of the N in CENT; and a strong die scratch runs from WNW to ESE through the lower 1st column and the 1st bay. This extensive reverse marker profile makes WDDO-003 one of the most securely attributable varieties for the 1969 date, since the die scratch constellation is essentially unique to this die pair.
