Description

Designated WDDO-001 by the Wexler team for the 1969 Philadelphia-mint Lincoln Memorial cent, this doubled die obverse displays a Class V clockwise (CW) spread from a pivot at approximately 5:00, with doubling visible on the LIB of LIBERTY and on the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST. A Class V pivot results from the working hub rotating around a fixed point during the secondary impression — in this case, the pivot near 5:00 means that design elements in the upper-left quadrant (LIBERTY, IGWT) experience the greatest displacement while those near the lower-right show minimal separation. Cross-referenced as CONECA 1-O-V, Crawford CDDO-001, and Coppercoins 1969P-1DO-002, this variety is well-documented across multiple attribution services. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge (dot) just under the E of LIBERTY and a short die gouge running from WNW to ESE below Lincoln's lips — both of which serve as reliable confirmation points when the doubling alone is ambiguous. On the reverse, a small die gouge protrudes from the rim above the right side of the U in UNITED, and a short die gouge can be found to the right of the top of the 2nd Memorial column. These reverse markers are essential for confirming die identity since the reverse itself shows no doubling on this variety.
