1969 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Attributed as WDDO-002 by the Wexler team, this 1969 Philadelphia-mint doubled die obverse presents a strong clockwise (CW) spread concentrated on the 9 and 6 of the date. The selective visibility on only two digits — the numerals whose curved forms provide the most favorable geometry for displaying rotational displacement — indicates that the hub's pivot point was positioned such that the date area fell in the zone of maximum separation while other design elements experienced displacement below the threshold of visibility. Cross-referenced as CONECA 2-O-V and Crawford CDDO-002, the variety carries established attributions across multiple cataloging systems. Obverse die markers include a short die gouge extending ESE from the rim to the right of the top of the N in IN. On the reverse, a strong die scratch runs from SW to NE between the upper parts of the left vertical bar and the diagonal bar of the N in CENT, accompanied by numerous other die scratches throughout the reverse. The abundance of reverse die scratches provides a constellation of confirmation points, making this variety attributable even on specimens too worn to clearly display the obverse doubling on the date numerals.
