Description

Listed in the Cherrypickers' Guide as FS-25-1968S-101 and cross-referenced as CONECA 1-O-I and Wexler 1968-S 25c Pr WDDO-001, this proof 1968-S Washington Quarter doubled die obverse is one of the strongest doubled dies in the Washington Quarter series. The variety exhibits extremely strong Class I counterclockwise spread on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, the designer's initials, the lower queue, upper hair details, and the eyelid. Obverse die markers include a die scratch northwest from the top of the chin and a die scratch northeast from the back of the queue ribbon northwest from the mintmark. The reverse carries a curved die scratch on the lower D in DOLLAR. The Cherrypickers' listing confirms this as a major variety worthy of premium valuation, and the breadth of doubling across virtually every obverse element — from the motto through the portrait details to the date — makes it immediately recognizable even at moderate magnification. The 1968-S was the first San Francisco proof issue after the 1965-1967 Special Mint Set hiatus. Struck as a proof in clad composition.
