1968-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1968-S 25-cent Proof WDDR-001 and holding the primary DDR catalog position for this date and mint, this proof Washington Quarter exhibits a strong Class I counterclockwise spread on USA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, QUARTER DOLLAR, and the heraldic eagle wreath on William Cousins's reverse design. The broad scope of affected elements — spanning inscriptions and decorative features across the entire reverse — confirms substantial rotational hub displacement during the die-sinking process. This variety is further distinguished by a dual-variety obverse: the die carries a repunched mintmark listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1968-S 25-cent Proof WRPM-007, showing an S over S displacement to the west. A small die gouge sits just above the right side of the mintmark. On the reverse, a die gouge appears on the eagle's right wing to the right of the I in UNITED. The convergence of strong DDR doubling and an RPM on the same die pair makes this an especially desirable variety for attribution specialists. The 1968-S proof Washington Quarter was struck in copper-nickel clad composition at 5.67 grams on 24.3mm planchets at the San Francisco Mint, which resumed proof production that year after the 1965-1967 Special Mint Set period. Examine the reverse inscriptions and wreath under 5x magnification for the counterclockwise rotational spread.
