1968-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

Documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-507 and DMR-002, the 1968-D Roosevelt Dime RPM-001 holds the primary catalog position for repunched mintmark varieties on this date, identified with a D/D West repunch direction as noted in the comments. The first-position designation indicates this was either the earliest documented or the most prominent RPM variety for the 1968-D Roosevelt Dime, giving it particular significance within the variety specialist community. Three die stages document the working die's service life: Stage A where both the obverse and reverse are in early die state (EDS); Stage B in mid-die-state (MDS), unconfirmed; and Stage C in late die state (LDS), also unconfirmed. The D/D West displacement means the initial D mintmark was placed slightly east of the intended position, with the corrective westward second punch leaving the first impression's remnant visible at the eastern edge of the mintmark area. John R. Sinnock designed the Roosevelt Dime, and this 1968-D was struck at the Denver Mint in the clad composition (outer layers of 75% copper and 25% nickel bonded to a pure copper core) weighing 2.27 grams with a diameter of 17.9 mm. The 1968-D is among the first dates of clad Roosevelt Dime production following the 1964 silver cutoff and the 1965–1967 transitional period when no mintmarks appeared on any U.S. coins. The resumption of mintmarks in 1968 required the Denver Mint to re-establish its hand-punching procedures after a multi-year hiatus, and the presence of this primary RPM variety on the first date of resumed mintmark application suggests the re-established process immediately generated the same types of positioning errors that had characterized pre-1965 mintmark application.
