Description

From the first year of the Kennedy Half Dollar series, RPM-006 of the 1964-D issue documents a D/D North repunching — the secondary D mintmark displaced northward from its initial position, creating visible doubling most apparent at the top of the D where the secondary image protrudes beyond the primary. Listed in the Cherrypickers' Guide as FS-103, this variety carries mainstream collectibility recognition beyond the specialized variety community. The reverse die is classified as RDV-002, the "Flared G" variety — identifiable by distinctive flaring on the letter G. Adding further significance, the obverse die paired with this reverse is listed as DDO-003, making this a dual-variety coin where both the repunched mintmark and a doubled die obverse coexist on a single die pairing. The 1964-D Kennedy Half Dollar was struck in 90% silver during the series' inaugural year, produced in enormous quantities as the public hoarded the coins as memorials to President Kennedy. The convergence of RPM, DDO, FS listing, and first-year-of-issue status makes RPM-006 one of the more significant Kennedy Half Dollar die varieties.
