1964 Proof Lincoln Memorial Cent - PR-1DER-001T Trail Die Reverse

Description

TrailDies records 1964PR-1DER-001T as the first proof reverse with trails ever reported to it. The trails sit on the MERI of AMERICA and run at 330°, north-northwest, up toward the rim and slightly left, and TrailDies singles them out as clear and well formed. The code combines 1964 and PR (a proof of that year) with 1 for the cent, DER for a reverse design extension, 001 as its file number and the T of a trail die. Bob Piazza of Florida found the die. TrailDies gives no die markers, so the placement on those four letters and the direction are the identifiers. Trails are thought to come chiefly from rotary polishing of the die, though some instead name the die's movement against the hub.
