1964 Proof Lincoln Memorial Cent - Proof Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-039

Description

Assigned the thirty-ninth Wexler doubled die obverse designation in the Proof-prefixed catalog for the 1964 Lincoln cent, this variety has been documented with the notation that no significant die markers are present on either the obverse or reverse. The absence of die markers does not diminish the variety's authenticity or collectibility; it simply means that the die surfaces were relatively clean of the scratches, gouges, and cracks that provide attribution shortcuts on other varieties. Instead, identification depends entirely on the doubling pattern itself — the specific direction, magnitude, and distribution of the secondary hub image across the coin's design elements. Without die markers to serve as secondary confirmation, collectors must exercise particular care in matching the doubling spread against Wexler reference photographs to ensure accurate attribution. Misidentification among the many 1964 proof DDO varieties is a genuine risk when no die markers are available to corroborate the match. Collectors should work under strong directional lighting with magnification of 10x or greater, examining LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date for signs of the secondary hub impression. Struck on a polished 3.11-gram, 19.05 mm planchet of 95% copper and 5% zinc.
