Description

Displaying a close clockwise spread from a pivot point at 10:00 visible on the date, the 1964 WDDO-036 is a proof doubled die obverse classified as Class V pivoted hub doubling. In a pivoted doubling event, the hub rotates slightly around a fixed pivot point between successive impressions into the die, producing doubling that increases in magnitude as one moves farther from the pivot — meaning the date, located well away from a 10:00 pivot, may show more pronounced doubling than design elements closer to the pivot. The obverse carries a diagnostic die gouge on the bottom right side of the base of Lincoln's bust. On the reverse, a die scratch runs across the rim above ERIC in AMERICA and a small die gouge dot sits to the right of the right cornice. These die markers provide attribution confirmation points beyond the doubling pattern itself. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 1964 1¢ Pr WDDO-036 and attributed by the Wexler Team, this proof variety comes from the 1964 mintage of 3,950,762 proof cents. With proof dies limited to approximately 3,000 strikes, the maximum population of this variety is inherently small. The close spread designation indicates that the doubling is subtle and requires careful examination under magnification, as close spreads produce narrower separation between the primary and secondary images than bold or wide spreads. Struck on a polished 3.11-gram, 19mm bronze planchet of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc.
