Description
On this 1964 proof Lincoln cent, TrailDies records trails running in two opposite directions from the IBER of LIBERTY: one set at 170°, a little east of due south, and a second at 350°, a little west of due north. Its file number, 1964PR-1DEO-001T, gives the year and proof status (PR), the denomination (1, the cent), the side (DEO, an obverse design extension), the file (001) and the type (T, trails). The die was reported by Larry Nienaber of Arizona. The usual explanation for trails is rotary polishing of the die, which drags fibres out of the letter recesses; a minority view ties them to die-to-hub movement instead.
