1963 Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

1963 WDDR-001 is a doubled die reverse on the 1963 Washington quarter, cataloged by the Wexler team. A Class I counterclockwise (CCW) spread appears on QUARTER DOLLAR, E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and slightly on the lower branch ends. The obverse is itself a doubled die, listed in the Wexler files as 1963 WDDO-006: a spread toward the center appears on LIBERTY, the bottom of the queue, the designer's initials, the date and IN GOD WE TRUST. Its marker is a scratch heading NE off the top of the O in GOD. On the reverse, a heavy gouge separates the U in QUARTER, at its upper left, from the leaf above it. John A. Wexler submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 1-R-I, and Cherrypickers as FS-25-1963-102. Wexler notes that the variety has turned up in Mint sets. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
