1963-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-008

Description

A spread towards the center shows on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, the designer's initials, and the lower queue (ponytail) of Washington's portrait on this eighth doubled die obverse for the 1963 Denver Mint Washington Quarter, attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1963-D 25-cent WDDO-008. Die markers include a die scratch running ENE from the right side of the 1 in the date and die scratches running ENE from the upper B in LIBERTY on the obverse, while the reverse shows a die gouge (dot) southwest of the eagle's beak. The center-directed spread indicates the hub was slightly compressed or contracted relative to the die during hubbing, producing inward displacement rather than the outward spread seen in more common doubling classes. The 1963-D Washington Quarter was the penultimate year of 90% silver composition for the denomination — silver quarters ended after 1964, making DDOs from these final silver dates of particular interest to collectors pursuing both variety and composition significance. The Washington Quarter design by John Flanagan had been in production since 1932, and the lower queue of Washington's hair is one of the more commonly affected areas for hub doubling on this portrait design.
