Description

Bearing a very close spread on TRUST and the bottom of the ribbon, this 1963 Denver Mint Washington Quarter doubled die obverse is cataloged as WDDO-007 under Wexler Variety ID 1963-D 25 cent WDDO-007. The tight displacement concentrates on the trust motto and ribbon area, requiring careful examination under magnification to detect. Obverse die markers include a die scratch running north from the middle of the nose and a die scratch running west-northwest to east-southeast to the right of the bottom of the Y in LIBERTY. On the reverse, a die crack descends down the eagle's right wing and extends to the Q in QUARTER, accompanied by a small die gouge to the left of the bottom of the first A in AMERICA. The reverse die crack tracing the eagle's wing provides a dramatic secondary diagnostic that is often easier to spot than the subtle obverse doubling itself.
