1963-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006
ErrorDescription
Identified by the Wexler Team as 1963-D 25-cent WDDO-006, this Washington quarter doubled die obverse shows a close spread to the north on IN GOD WE TRUST and the lower queue of Washington's hair ribbon. The doubling, though tight, is confirmable under moderate magnification. Obverse die markers include a long die scratch running SSW from the bottom of the U in TRUST out to the rim, a die crack running east-west through the upper forehead and into the hair at the top of the head, and another die crack across the base of the bust extending into the lower queue. The reverse carries its own set of die deterioration markers: a die crack runs down the eagle's right wing and extends to the Q in QUARTER, another passes through the eagle's head to a large die chip at the back of the head, and a third crack descends down the eagle's left wing to the I in AMERICA. No cross-references to other cataloging systems are currently known. The extensive die cracking on both sides indicates this die pair saw prolonged service, with the obverse doubling remaining visible throughout the die's working life.
