1962-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-005

Description

Showing the mintmark position D/D West — indicating the initial D was punched west of its final position before being corrected — this 1962-D Roosevelt Silver Dime repunched mintmark was submitted by Gary Shaffstall and attributed by the Wexler Team as 1962-D 10c WRPM-005. Repunched mintmarks from this era result from the manual process of hand-punching individual mint mark letters into each working die. A die sinker at the Denver Mint used a separate punch to add the "D" to each obverse die, and when the first impression landed in a slightly incorrect position, the punch was repositioned and struck again to place the letter in its intended location. The initial misplaced impression remains visible as a secondary "D" displaced to the west of the final position. Die markers strengthen the attribution: a NNW/SSE die scratch runs from the lower lip to the nose on the obverse, along with a die scratch extending north from the upper center of the 9 in the date. On the reverse, a die scratch runs ENE from the lower right of the E in ONE to the D in DIME. No other cross-references are currently known. The 1962-D Roosevelt Dime was struck in 90% silver composition — one of the final silver dime dates before the 1965 transition to copper-nickel clad. Five repunched mintmarks documented for the 1962-D reflects the manual mintmark application process that continued through 1989, when the Mint transitioned to including the mint mark directly on the master die. Each RPM variety records a unique hand-punching event, preserving evidence of the human element in mid-century die preparation at the Denver facility.
