1959-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-003
Error
Description
Showing a D/D/D punched north with counterclockwise rotation, RPM-003 is cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-610/DMR-005 and progresses through four documented die stages on the 1959-D Lincoln Memorial cent. Stage A presents both obverse and reverse in early die state, offering the cleanest view of the triple-punched mintmark before die wear diminishes the secondary impressions. Stage B introduces multiple die cracks: one over V.D.B. (the designer's initials on the obverse), another in Lincoln's hair, a third on the forehead, plus die cracks on Memorial columns 1 and 12 and the right cornice, all indicating mid die state progression. By Stage C, the obverse deterioration accelerates with a die break developing behind Lincoln's ear at late-to-mid die state, accompanied by three die chips on column 12. Stage D represents a late die state that remains unconfirmed. The triple punching with rotation makes RPM-003 particularly interesting to specialists, as the counterclockwise twist indicates the mintmark punch was repositioned with both translational and rotational correction between applications.
