Description

Listed by VarietyVista as UVC-0885 / DMR-004, the 1956-D RPM-002 Washington quarter features a D mint mark repunched to the northeast, classified as D/D Northeast. A repunched mint mark results from the mint mark punch being applied to the working die more than once, leaving traces of the initial impression beneath or adjacent to the final position. Three die stages chart this die's service life. Stage A is cataloged as early die state, unconfirmed. In Stage B, the reverse reaches mid-die state while a die crack develops across the forehead and upper hair on the obverse. By Stage C, a die crack runs down the eagle's right wing on the reverse in late die state, accompanied by a die chip on the eagle's head, with the obverse also reaching late die state. The 1956-D Washington quarter was produced in large numbers at Denver, making this RPM an accessible variety for collectors to search for in circulated rolls. The northeast displacement of the secondary D is best observed under magnification near the serif areas of the mint mark.
