Description

Standing as the primary doubled die reverse for the 1956-D Washington quarter, DDR-001 exhibits extreme extra thickness on all lettering, lower branches, and leaves, with triple impressions visible on the left stem. VarietyVista assigns die markers UVC-0883 and DMR-002, tracking four progressive die stages. Stage A at early die state is unconfirmed. Stage B at mid-die state shows the reverse progressing with a die crack across the forehead and upper hair on the obverse. Stage C at late die state adds a die crack on the eagle's right wing with the obverse also in late die state. By Stage D at very late die state, a heavy die break appears on the eagle's right wing, and the obverse is similarly in very late die state. The triple impression on the left stem is particularly notable, as tripled elements are considerably less common than standard doubled dies. The extreme extra thickness across all reverse lettering makes this variety detectable with relatively low magnification, placing it among the stronger Washington quarter doubled dies of the decade and the most significant variety for the 1956-D date.
