1954 (S) Jefferson Nickel - Over Mint Mark WOMM-001 / OMM-001

Description

Cross-referenced as FS-501, this 1954-S Jefferson nickel is VarietyVista's OMM-001 and Wexler's WOMM-001, an S/D South over mint mark with an S punched over a D. Wexler writes the cross-reference FS-05-1954S-501 (033). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties records the mint mark as S/D South and follows the die through two stages. At obverse stage A a die scratch crosses the U of TRUST heading toward Jefferson's forehead; obverse stage B has nothing noted. On the reverse, stage A shows the bottom of the D's vertical bar within the lower left of the S, a die scratch heads WNW from the lower left of the dome, another heads ESE from the lower E in FIVE, and more scratches appear across the reverse. At reverse stage B the S looks filled at its base and the D's bar can no longer be seen. The submitter is unknown. CONECA lists it as OMM #1, and Wexler adds the Breen number 2734. VarietyVista, with the reporter unknown, also describes S/D South and follows the die under its marker codes UVC-400 and DMR-006 through four stages. Stage A, an early-middle die state, has light east-west die scratches on the upper reverse and a die scratch through the U of TRUST toward the forehead. At stage B the D to the south is strong (middle die state, obverse too); at stage C it is medium (late die state, obverse too); and at stage D it is weak, with a light die crack running northwest in the hair, in a very late die state.
