Description

Showing a D/D South displacement, the 1954-D Jefferson nickel RPM-004 is cataloged by VarietyVista under die markers UVC-395 and DMR-005. Three die stages document the progression of this Denver Mint variety. Stage A at early die state remains unconfirmed. Stage B at mid-die state is identified by a light diagonal die scratch just east of the mintmark and a light die scratch over the 19 of the date on the obverse. Stage C progresses to late die state, confirmed by a light die scratch over MER of AMERICA on the reverse and a light vertical die scratch in front of the eye on the obverse. Jefferson nickels of the mid-1950s are widely available in circulated grades, but the repunched mintmark adds meaningful variety interest to an otherwise common date. The southward displacement of the secondary D impression beneath the primary strike is the key diagnostic, best examined under magnification of 5x or greater. The progressive accumulation of die scratches from Stage B through Stage C helps collectors pinpoint where their specimen falls in the die's production sequence.
