1954-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Holding the primary catalog position for 1954-D Jefferson Nickel doubled die obverses, WDDO-001 was attributed by Brian A. Ribar as a Class II distorted hub variety. The doubling is visible on LIBERTY, the star, and the date, with the Class II designation indicating the hub underwent slight distortion during the impression process, producing a distinctive spread pattern. Obverse die markers include two die scratches between the R and T of LIBERTY and a die scratch inside the lower portion of the B in LIBERTY. On the reverse, a long die scratch runs below the LO of MONTICELLO, and slanted die scratches appear inside the large semicircular window of the building's facade. Denver struck approximately 117 million nickels in 1954, and the mid-1950s represent an active period for Jefferson Nickel variety production. The die scratches between R and T on the obverse provide a quick preliminary identification before confirming the Class II spread under higher magnification, where the distorted hub characteristics become evident on the affected design elements.
