1954-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Jared Vineyard attributed this variety, designated WDDR-001 for the 1954 Denver Mint Jefferson Nickel, documenting Class VIII tilted hub doubling just below the lower right portion of Monticello's steps. Class VIII is among the less common doubling classes, occurring when the hub tilts during impression, creating pivoting displacement that varies across the die face — strongest at points farthest from the tilt axis. The location below the steps is significant because the step area is one of the most scrutinized design elements on Jefferson Nickels, as the number of fully struck steps affects grade designation and value. Obverse die markers include a die scratch from the lower left of the I in IN, while reverse markers show a die gouge in the lower portion of the left arch. Felix Schlag's depiction of Thomas Jefferson's Monticello estate has appeared on the nickel reverse since 1938. Collectors should examine the area immediately below the right portion of the steps for the tilted hub displacement and use the die scratch on I and the arch gouge as confirming markers.
