1949 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002 / DDO-001

Description

Carrying VarietyVista's codes UVC-1777 and DMR-013 and cross-referenced as Cherrypickers FS-101, the 1949-S Lincoln wheat cent DDO-001, which Wexler numbers WDDO-002, shows medium spread on the 194 of the date and a blunt-top 4 over a pointed-top 4. Wexler writes the Cherrypickers number FS-01-1949S-101. Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties describes a 1949 "Blunt 4" date hubbed over a 1948 "Pointed 4" date, with doubling on the 194 and extra thickness on LIBERTY. On the obverse two parallel NW-SE scratches run above the bowtie and two parallel NNW-SSE scratches lie northwest of the 1 in the date. On the reverse an NNW scratch rises from the upper right of the N in ONE, a short NNW scratch from the top left of the T in CENT, V-shaped scratches sit just over the lower end of the right wheat stem, and a short NNW-SSE scratch lies left of that stem's tip. G. J. Lawson submitted it. CONECA lists it as 1-O-III and Coppercoins as 1949S-1DO-003. VarietyVista, which also credits G. J. Lawson, describes the medium spread on the 194, the blunt-top 4 over a pointed-top 4, and extra thickness on IN GOD WE TRUST. Its stage A has north-south scratches on both obverse and reverse in an early die state; stage B has both sides middle; stage C both late-middle; and stage D a new scratch pattern on each side, late die state.
