1949 (S) Jefferson Nickel - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-011

Description

At the eleventh cataloged repunched mintmark for the 1949 San Francisco Jefferson Nickel, WRPM-011 represents the outer frontier of the known RPM census for this prolific date and mint. Attributed by the Wexler Team, it testifies to both the imprecision inherent in hand-punched mintmarks and the extraordinary diligence of researchers who identified eleven distinct RPM dies. Few date-and-mint combinations in the Jefferson series match this variety depth, making the 1949-S a case study in the intersection of production volume and collector determination. The S mintmark on Felix Schlag's reverse received its placement from an engraver using a steel punch and mallet, and WRPM-011 captures one more instance where the first impression was followed by a corrective second strike. As the highest-numbered RPM in the current census, it likely exhibits among the most subtle repunching characteristics, suited for experienced collectors equipped with quality magnification. Completing a full set from WRPM-001 through WRPM-011 would constitute a notable achievement in Jefferson Nickel variety numismatics.
