1949-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002
ErrorDescription
Attributed to Brian A. Ribar, this doubled die reverse on a 1949 San Francisco Mint Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class II distorted hub doubling with close doubling visible on E PLURIBUS UNUM. Class II doubling results from the hub being slightly tilted or distorted during die production, creating a consistent spread across the affected design elements rather than a simple lateral shift. The 1949-S Jefferson Nickel, bearing Felix Schlag's classic design, was struck at San Francisco during regular business strike production. Diagnostic die markers on the obverse include a die dot to the left of the lower portion of Jefferson's forehead and a die scratch through the top of the Y of LIBERTY. On the reverse, heavy slanted die scratches appear inside the small left window of Monticello, and two strong die scratches run above EN of CENTS. These markers help distinguish this specific die pair from other 1949-S varieties. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1949-S WDDR-002, this variety offers cherrypickers a well-documented set of diagnostics for positive identification in hand.
