Description
Fourth repunched mintmark for the 1949-S Jefferson Nickel, RPM-004 records a hand-punched variety from the San Francisco Mint during the late postwar period. Cataloged by VarietyVista with codes UVC-374 and DMR-005, struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel, the standard composition restored after wartime silver. Die progression spans three stages: Stage A (EDS), Stage B (MDS), and Stage C with obverse and reverse in LDS. San Francisco produced Jefferson Nickels in smaller quantities than Philadelphia or Denver during the late 1940s, giving S-mint varieties inherent relative scarcity. Four RPMs from a single S-mint issue documents the frequency of hand-punching misalignment even at a facility known for careful die preparation. Schlag's Monticello reverse, unchanged since 1938, carried the small S in its traditional position, and each San Francisco working die required individual S punch placement.
