Description

Submitted by Jeff Longueuay and cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1949-D 10¢ WRPM-007, this Roosevelt Silver Dime displays a D/D Tilted (Rotated) repunched mintmark. The obverse shows a light west by north / east by south die crack at the top of the hair, while the reverse carries weak east-west die scratches to the lower right of the I in DIME, weak east-west die scratches through the lower area of the M in DIME, and a northwest-southeast die scratch at the upper center of the M in DIME. Additional die markers documented for later examination include a light WNW/ESE die crack at the top of the hair on the obverse and a light NE/SW die scratch on the right side of the upper olive leaves on the reverse. No additional cross-references beyond the Wexler designation are currently known. The tilted or rotated subtype of RPM produces a distinctive diagnostic signature because the angular offset between the two mintmark impressions causes different portions of the secondary D to show varying degrees of separation — creating an effect where one part of the D appears to lean away from the primary while the diametrically opposite part appears to converge toward it. The 1949-D Roosevelt Dime was designed by John R. Sinnock and struck at the Denver Mint in 90% silver composition (90% silver, 10% copper) weighing 2.50 grams with a diameter of 17.9 mm. The 1949-D had a mintage of approximately 26.0 million pieces. The concentration of die scratches around DIME on the reverse — three separate scratch features within and around the denomination inscription — provides a particularly efficient attribution zone where multiple diagnostic markers can be checked within a small area of the coin under a single magnification setting.
