1948-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-004

Description

Southeast displacement of the D/D repunch defines WRPM-004 on the 1948 Denver Mint Jefferson Nickel, where the mintmark was initially punched and then re-impressed slightly to the southeast, leaving overlapping D impressions visible under magnification. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge to the left of the first T in TRUST, while the reverse carries an extensive die crack network: a crack runs north from the dome through the second U in PLURIBUS to the rim, and also south down the right side of the dome, passing between columns three and four and running through the E in MONTICELLO before extending to the N in CENTS. This multi-branching reverse die crack documents advanced structural deterioration where a single fracture propagated in multiple directions, creating a web of cracks across the architectural detail of Monticello. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1948-D 5¢ WRPM-004 with no other known references, attributed by the Wexler Team. Denver struck 44,734,000 Jefferson Nickels in 1948, the eleventh year of Schlag's design. The extensive reverse cracking provides a particularly useful attribution aid because the crack network's distinctive geometry — branching from dome to rim through specific columns and letters — creates a fingerprint-like pattern unique to this die pair.
