1948 (D) Jefferson Nickel - Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

The 1948-D Jefferson nickel RPM-001 is catalogued by VarietyVista under UVC-359 and DMR-002, with repunching direction D/D Southeast. Die stage documentation: Stage A is early die state, unconfirmed; Stage B is middle die state, unconfirmed; Stage C is late die state, unconfirmed — all three stages currently awaiting further population documentation. The 1948-D Jefferson nickel returned to standard small-D placement at the right of Monticello following the end of the wartime large-mintmark series in 1945, struck in the normal 75% copper/25% nickel composition. Denver mintage for 1948 nickels was approximately 44.7 million pieces. RPM-001 status typically indicates the first repunched mintmark variety attributed for a given date — often the most visible or frequently encountered RPM in the population. The southeast displacement is the key diagnostic criterion. A VarietyVista note flags that new color digital photographs of a specimen are needed, reflecting the ongoing curatorial work that keeps the database current with modern imaging standards.
