1947 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-003

Description

Produced through hub doubling where a misalignment during die preparation left duplicated obverse design elements, this Philadelphia Mint 1947 Lincoln Wheat Cent was documented by VarietyVista. Die markers UVC-1752 / DMR-004: Stage A with circular lathe marks visible in the field in front of the face and on the forehead at EMDS, a die gouge from the second T of STATES to the last A of AMERICA at EMDS, and a die gouge from the second T of STATES to C of AMERICA; Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The cataloger notes the spread is closer than DDO-002 and needs a specimen for new color photos and die stage information. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, the lathe marks on the face field are manufacturing artifacts from die surface preparation that survived into production, providing an additional diagnostic beyond the hub doubling itself.
