Description

A dramatic production drop defines the 1947 Lincoln cent — Philadelphia's output plummeted from 991 million the prior year to just 190 million — and CU-1C-1947-01 opens the cud catalog for this lower-volume date. The sharp mintage decline reflected post-war economic adjustment: wartime demand had inflated cent production to extraordinary levels, and 1947 brought a correction as surplus coins in circulation absorbed much of the transactional need. The composition was transitioning back toward standard bronze, moving away from the shell-casing brass of 1944-1946 toward the traditional 95% copper, 5% tin and zinc formula. With fewer coins to produce, individual dies faced lighter duty, which should have reduced fracture rates — yet cuds still occurred because no amount of die optimization eliminates every rim failure over tens of thousands of impressions. As the inaugural entry for the 1947 Philadelphia cent, CU-1C-1947-01 anchors whatever additional cuds may surface for this date. The lower mintage makes all 1947 cent varieties scarcer in absolute terms than their billion-mintage wartime predecessors. Documented by Cuds on Coins and cross-referenced under its catalog designation.
