1947 (D) Roosevelt Dime - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001 / DDO-001

Description

DDO-001, which Wexler numbers WDDO-001, is a doubled die obverse on the 1947-D Roosevelt dime, cross-referenced as FS-102 in the Cherrypickers' Guide. Wexler writes that number as FS-10-1947D-102 and notes it was removed in the 6th Edition. Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties describes a strong spread toward the rim on LIBERTY and, from another hubbing, a very light spread toward the center on IN GOD WE TRUST and the date; the designer's initials show only very weak doubling. On the obverse a scratch runs west from the 1 of the date to the bust, an E/W scratch sits in the field midway between that 1 and the bust, a long scratch runs east to the neck from the D of GOD, and chips lie around IN GOD WE TRUST. On the reverse NE/SW scratches surround the olive branch, heaviest near the R and the first U of PLURIBUS. Joe Feld submitted the coin, and CONECA lists the die as 1-O-II (3). VarietyVista records a strong spread on LIBERTY with a lighter spread on the date and IN GOD WE TRUST, and does not name a reporter. Under its marker codes UVC-147 and DMR-002 it follows three stages, with both sides in an early die state at stage A, a middle die state at stage B, and a late die state at stage C.
