Description

Fifth repunched mintmark cataloged for the 1946-S Washington Quarter, RPM-005 documents an S/S displacement from San Francisco's first post-war quarter production. Recorded by VarietyVista under UVC-0636 and DMR-010, three die stages trace the die's working life from Stage A through Stage C. The 1946-S Washington Quarter marked the return to peacetime coinage production at San Francisco after years of wartime priorities, though the 90% silver composition remained unchanged throughout the war. Each working die continued to receive its mintmark through hand-punching — the manual process of positioning a steel letter punch and driving it into the die face with a hammer strike.
