1946 (S) Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

1946-S WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse on the 1946-S Washington quarter, cataloged by the Wexler team. A strong spread toward the center appears on LIBERTY. Obverse Stage A has N/S scratches crossing the E of LIBERTY, a gouge through the 9 just under its upper loop, and a crack heading east from the upper forehead through the hair. On Obverse Stage B, the scratch through the E is weaker, and a crack crosses the bust's base. Reverse Stage A shows scratches heading SE off the right side of the lower left inner leaf. Reverse Stage B is a new reverse die, a repunched mint mark which the Wexler RPM files carry as 1946-S WRPM-002, an S/S West (the extra S lies west). Joe Feld submitted Stage A and Tony Russo submitted Stage B. CONECA lists it as 1-O-II + RPM #3. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
