1946-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001

Description

Attributed by VarietyVista, this 1946 San Francisco Mint Washington Quarter displays a strong doubled die obverse with the spread most prominent on LIBERTY. Four die stages have been documented across two die pairings. Under UVC-0627, DMR-002: Stage A is an unconfirmed early die state; Stage B (mid-die state) shows a medium die gouge running horizontally through the 9 of the date along with numerous north-south die scratches on the obverse; Stage C (late mid-die state) develops a die crack across the upper hair and forehead while the die scratches weaken significantly. Under UVC-0628, DMR-003: Stage D represents a late die state with a die crack extending across the bust, paired with a different reverse die. Notably, the Stage D reverse is listed as RPM-003, making Stage D a combination variety with both doubled die obverse and repunched mintmark diagnostics. This combo pairing adds significant collector interest. Struck in 90% silver with John Flanagan's George Washington design, the 1946-S is part of the early postwar Washington Quarter production at San Francisco.
