Description

The 1946-S Washington Quarter RPM-003, documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-0628 and DMR-003, is noteworthy for its pairing with a doubled die obverse. The obverse die is listed as DDO-001, making RPM-003 a compound variety with independent die errors on both sides. John Flanagan's Washington Quarter design, struck in 90% silver at San Francisco, provides the canvas. The mintmark geometry is S/S West, with the secondary S offset to the left of the final position. Three die stages are recorded. Stage A (Early Die State) and Stage B (Middle Die State) are both unconfirmed. Stage C (Late Die State) is confirmed by significant die degradation: the reverse reaches LDS, a die crack forms across the bust, and a separate die crack crosses the hair onto the forehead — two distinct crack paths converging on the portrait by the terminal stage. The dual cracks across the bust and into the hair provide definitive late-state anchors. The compound DDO-001 obverse pairing gives RPM-003 added appeal for collectors who seek coins where multiple die-preparation anomalies converge. The 1946-S Washington Quarter was the first post-war San Francisco quarter issue.
