1946 (S) Washington Quarter - Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Cross-referenced as FS-501 in the Fivaz-Stanton catalog, this 1946-S Washington Quarter RPM-002 documents an S/S North repunched mintmark — the second punch landing north of the initial impression. Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-0634 and DMR-008, four die stages trace the die's life: Stage A presents early die state when the northward displacement is sharpest, Stage B advances to MDS, Stage C reaches LDS, and Stage D documents VLDS near retirement. The FS-501 cross-reference ensures this variety receives attribution from third-party grading services, an important distinction for collector value. The 1946-S Washington Quarter was struck in 90% silver at San Francisco during the immediate post-war period. Hand-punching of the S mintmark into each working die remained standard practice, and the northward repunch direction indicates the steel punch was repositioned higher before the second blow — one of several directional categories used to classify RPM varieties.
