1946-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-013

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team under Variety ID 1946-S 10-cent WDDO-013, this San Francisco Mint Roosevelt Dime exhibits counterclockwise spread from a pivot at twelve o'clock, visible on the designer's initial and weakly on IN GOD WE TRUST and the date. The obverse progresses through two stages: Stage A (Type I) shows northeast-southwest die scratches through the Y of LIBERTY and in front of the hair, plus a strong north-northwest die scratch from the upper center of W in WE running between I and G of IN GOD; Stage B retains the scratch in front of the hair but the scratches through Y are gone, and the scratch at W of WE is weaker. The reverse also progresses through stages — Stage A features a trumpet tail mintmark with doubling attributed as WWHR-001, plus a die clash mark below the lower olive; Stage B shows a die gouge appearing as a dot inside the O of OF, closer to the top. The 1946-S was the inaugural year of John R. Sinnock's Roosevelt Dime design, making doubled die varieties from the first San Francisco production run historically significant as early die varieties on a brand-new coin type.
