1946 (S) Roosevelt Dime - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

1946-S WDDO-003 is a doubled die obverse on the 1946-S Roosevelt dime, cataloged by the Wexler team. LIBERTY, the forehead and the eyelid have a spread toward the center, and a weaker spread in the same direction appears on IN GOD WE TRUST, the designer's initials and the date. Obverse Stage A is Type I. A gouge lies at 12:30, in the gap from the head to the rim. Another gouge leaves the lower left inside of LIBERTY's B, one runs west from the top of the date's 6, and a small gouge (dot) lies SE of where the jaw meets the neckline. On Obverse Stage B the gouges at the head and rim and at the B remain, while the gouge from the 6 has been abraded away. Obverse Stage C keeps only the chip by the rim near the head and a faint trace of the dot under the jaw line; every other earlier marker is gone, and a good part of the doubling has weakened. Obverse Stage D still has the Stage C markers. Reverse Stage A has a Trumpet Tail mint mark. A scratch runs north from the upper left side of the N in UNUM, another runs south off the stem of the lower olive, and a gouge marks the lower part of the flame. On Reverse Stage B these Stage A markers are still present but weaker. On Reverse Stage C only the gouge on the torch flame survives from earlier stages. New are two short SW scratches off the lower olive stem, a larger opening in the mint mark caused by abrasion, a strong NE/SW scratch through the upper olive, and a NE scratch starting at the first U in PLURIBUS (upper left side) and reaching the olive branch. On Reverse Stage D the scratch through the upper olive is weaker and abraded, the gouge on the torch flame is still there, the scratch from the U in PLURIBUS has nearly vanished, and the scratches from the lower olive stem are very weak. John A. Wexler submitted Stages A and B, and Joe Feld Stages C and D. Wexler lists no cross-references.
