1946-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

A close Class II spread toward the center is visible on LIBERTY, establishing this 1946-S Roosevelt Dime as one of the foundational attributed doubled die obverses for the Roosevelt series. The first year of the Roosevelt Dime was 1946, making WDDO-001 one of the earliest identified doubled die obverse varieties for this long-running clad and silver series. The 1946-S was struck in 90% silver at San Francisco; the trumpet-tail S mintmark — a specific punch style identifiable by a slight flare at the lower serif — is a cataloged feature of this obverse die. Obverse markers (Type I): strong die scratches run south-southeast from the lower back of the head; a small die gouge appears below the right side of the B in LIBERTY. The reverse is also a doubled die, separately cataloged as 1946-S 10 cents WDDR-009, showing a close Class II spread toward the center on UNITED and ONE DIME, plus a north-northwest/south-southeast die scratch to the left of the upper D in DIME. The combination of a first-year Roosevelt Dime with both obverse and reverse doubled die attributions makes this a particularly appealing variety for specialists.
