1946-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-012

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1946-S 10-cent WDDO-012 with no other known cross-references, this Roosevelt Silver Dime obverse carries a very close spread towards the center visible on the date and the designer's initials JS (John R. Sinnock). This variety was previously listed as WDDO-015 but was reassigned after the discovery of doubled obverse working hub WWHO-001, which left large gaps in the listing sequence that were filled by renumbering existing varieties. The obverse is designated as Type I, with specific die markers including a northeast-southwest die scratch under the right side of the ear, a series of northeast-southwest die scratches between the Y of LIBERTY and the forehead, and two north-south die scratches between the 4 and 6 of the date. The reverse carries a trumpet tail mintmark — a distinctive S shape — along with a very weak, abraded northwest-southeast die scratch connecting the right upper oak leaf to the top leaves. The 1946-S Roosevelt Dime holds historical significance as the inaugural year of the denomination, introduced to honor President Franklin D. Roosevelt following his death in 1945. Struck at the San Francisco Mint in 90% silver at 2.5 grams and 17.91 mm diameter, the first-year Roosevelt Dime carries particular collector interest. The very close spread classification means the separation between primary and doubled images is minimal, requiring 10x or higher magnification and careful lighting to resolve the center-directed displacement on the date digits and JS initials. The Type I obverse designation and trumpet tail S mintmark provide additional confirmation points for attribution.
