1946 (S) Roosevelt Dime - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-011

Description

1946-S WDDO-011 is a doubled die obverse on the 1946-S Roosevelt dime, cataloged by the Wexler team. A strong spread toward the center appears on the date, the designer's initials, and the lower and back parts of the neck. Class V doubling from a pivot at 1:00 shows on IN GOD WE TRUST and LI of LIBERTY. Obverse Stage A is Type I, with NE/SW scratches in the field west of the forehead and brow. Obverse Stage B adds two very light scratches heading S by SE off the nose's bottom, toward the lips, and diagonal scratches low between the W and E of WE. On Obverse Stage C the stage markers are weak to gone; a die chip (dot) sits over the upper left of the R in TRUST, and a NE/SW gouge lies on the bust over the date. Reverse Stage A has a Trumpet Tail mint mark and is also a repunched mint mark, carried in Wexler's RPM files as 1946-S WRPM-003, an S/S Southeast. West of the flame's lower part is a gouge in the field. A scratch runs SW off the bottom of PLURIBUS's first U, and in UNUM another starts at the N's upper right top and runs SW across the N and on through the branch. Reverse Stage B has weaker Stage A markers and a gouge at the bottom of UNUM's second U. On Reverse Stage C the Stage A markers are weak to gone, and a die crack joins the rim to the upper M of AMERICA. Joe Feld submitted Stage A, John A. Wexler Stage B and Roy Pilot Stage C. CONECA lists it as 10-O-V. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
