1946 (S) Roosevelt Dime - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-008

Description

1946-S WDDO-008 is a doubled die obverse on the 1946-S Roosevelt dime, cataloged by the Wexler team. A spread toward the center appears on some letters of TRUST, the date and the designer's initials. Doubling from a pivot near 2:00 also appears on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the nostrils and the eyelid, and the last T of TRUST is tripled. Obverse Stage A is Type I. Between the nose and the eye is a curly V-shaped scratch; the nose is heavily abraded, crisscrossing scratches lie above it, and fan-shaped scratches spread in front of the lips. On Obverse Stage B the V-shaped scratch remains but weaker, and die polishing has weakened much of the doubling. Reverse Stage A has a Ball Serif mint mark. The upper left olive leaf carries heavy scratches, and a gouge sits between the upper parts of the first A and the M of AMERICA, nearer the A. On Reverse Stage B the olive leaf scratches are weaker, and the gouge between the A and M is still there, slightly larger. Eric Axtell submitted Stage A and Joe Feld Stage B. Wexler lists no cross-references. Its comments say it was formerly WDDO-020 and was renumbered when the doubled obverse working hub, WWHO-001, was found and left large gaps in the listings.
