1946 (S) Roosevelt Dime - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-005
Error
Description
1946-S WDDO-005 is a doubled die obverse on the 1946-S Roosevelt dime, cataloged by the Wexler team. WE TRUST and the Y of LIBERTY have a very close spread toward the center. Obverse Stage A is Type I and shows that same very close spread. A weak, wavy gouge crosses LIBERTY's E along its upper horizontal bar, an arching NE/SW gouge sits on the Y near its fork, and a wavy E/W gouge runs through the middle of the B. Obverse Stage B keeps the Stage A markers and adds a scratch heading south off the back of the head, short scratches heading north off its upper right, a clash on the nose's bridge, and a rim cud beginning over LI of LIBERTY; the doubling is weaker. On Obverse Stage C the scratch behind the head is weaker, the clash has been abraded away, and the rim cud over the L and I of LIBERTY is stronger. Reverse Stage A has a Trumpet Tail mint mark. It is also a doubled die, carried in Wexler's doubled die files as 1946-S WDDR-001, whose very strong westward spread appears on E PLURIBUS UNUM (stronger on the left), UNITED STATES, the torch flame and parts of the olive branch, with weaker doubling on ONE, the torch holder and parts of the oak branch. It is also a repunched mint mark, carried in the RPM files as 1946-S WRPM-002, an S/S Southeast. A N/S scratch crosses the dot on the right, and an ENE/WSW scratch crosses the bottom of AMERICA's last A. On Reverse Stage B the Stage A marker is abraded away; N/S scratches lie between the L of PLURIBUS and the lower left olive leaf, and scratches sit under the first U in PLURIBUS. On Reverse Stage C the secondary mint mark shows only at the bottom, a die chip sits over the B of PLURIBUS, and the first U of PLURIBUS has been abraded away. John Bordner submitted Stage A and John A. Wexler Stage B. Wexler lists no cross-references.
