1946-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-006
Error
Description
Among the earliest Roosevelt dime varieties — the series debuted in 1946 — DDO-006 from the San Francisco Mint shows light top-to-bottom spread on the date and on designer John Sinnock's JS initials at the truncation of Roosevelt's neck. The obverse carries the ODV-001 (Obverse Design Variety) designation, and the reverse mintmark is classified as MMS-002, the ball serif style identifiable by its rounded terminal strokes on the S. VarietyVista records this die under UVC-102 and DMR-010 across four die stages spanning the full life of the die: Stages A and B are both Early Die State (unconfirmed), indicating the die saw extended use before developing distinguishing wear. Stage C reaches Late Die State with a light die scratch running northwest from the upper M of AMERICA providing a clear diagnostic marker. Stage D progresses into Very Late Die State, with both obverse and reverse showing pronounced wear. The progression from EDS through VLDS across four stages documents an unusually long service life for this working die at the San Francisco facility.
